advice on starting e-commerce business

My experience running a company has made me the go to guy for business advice in family gatherings and functions. Most of the time it’s about starting an ecommerce business to sell one niche product or the other.

In this blog article I have summarised all the advice that I have dolled out in the past, so without much adieu let’s get into them.

A website is not enough

Every budding entrepreneur that wants to start an ecommerce business opens up Google and searches for agencies that can build a nice ecommerce portal. The agencies also happily build them a nice portal albeit a hefty price.

A couple of months into running the business the entrepreneur decides to shut shop and move to his day job as the business failed to make any sales outside the friends and family circle.

You might ask, if a shopping portal is not enough to succeed in ecommerce then what else is important.

To this question I would say content. Starting a shopping portal was enough in the early 2000s when there were not many ecommerce portals around. But in 2025 the market is crowded with thousands of ecommerce sites in every category. It is not enough to just have a website populated with your products.

Creating a website on Shopify is also not enough as it does not matter where you create your website the underlying is the same.

The Solution: Create content

The solution lies in pulling your target audience towards your website and then convincing them to make a purchase. For this you will need to create content that helps you in pulling your target audience to your website.

Right now Instagram is the best platform to share your content.

I have come across many individuals who have built successful businesses by just posting content on Instagram. A simple search on YouTube and Instagram will take you to hundred's of business pages and profiles who have built all kinds of businesses by merely posting content.

Do not start different forms of content on day one. For ecommerce the best form of content is video. The videos need not be long. It can be a two minute video which you can publish on your Instagram page.

Where to start: How to create content?

If this is not your first time on this blog you should have noticed me emphasizing about creating content in almost all blog posts. So content is the key to making money online.

This being said, most of us in the beginning always have one question in their mind. How to start creating content?

Choosing the type of content is the first step. For an ecommerce business it is always videos.

Checkout our step by step guide on how you can create content effectively

So pick up your phone and start shooting videos and upload them to the page that you created for your ecommerce business.

Shooting alone is not enough, you need to upload it to Instagram. Some of your early videos can be really bad and that is totally fine. The key here is to get used to shooting your own videos and uploading it to Instagram and overcome the initial shyness.

A couple of weeks of doing this will help you in overcoming the initial fear or shyness of putting your video on the internet. You will also notice a gradual increase in the quality of your videos.

Marques Brownlee started his YouTube channel when he was in school and today everyone in tech knows who he is.

Lesson Learnt: Starting an ecommerce business? Create an Instagram page first.

So my advice to the tens of people who asked me advice to start their ecommerce business has always been, do not spend money on building a website. At the max buy a domain and maybe have a landing page, that’s all.

Spend all your budget on creating and publishing content. Make sure the content is in video format with a little bit of images every now and then.

Once you have published 20 reels on Instagram start creating ads on Instagram. Have a small budget for each ad and experiment with three to four ads and see which one gives you more results. Keep the target audience as narrowed down as possible. You don’t want to waste money by showing your ads to people who are not your target audience.
Do this consistently over a period of 24 to 36 months and see your ecommerce business flourish. It is at this point you go ahead and launch your ecommerce portal.
